Frequently Asked Questions (Domain Names)

What is a domain name?
A domain name is the means by which you are identified on the World Wide Web. (The process is akin to registering a name at Companies House.) It belongs to you for the initial registration period (usually 2 years) and thereafter for as long as you keep paying the RENEWAL FEES. Name registration is a completely separate issue from forwarding or hosting, explained below.

Registering a domain name and parking.
If you wish to register a name for future use, we'll 'park' it on our nameservers until you tell us what you want to do with it.

Registering a domain name with email/web forwarding.
Just tell us the existing email address and full url (web address) of the web site you wish your domain name to forward to and we'll do the rest. Please ensure you double check the information you are giving us.

(1) Email Forwarding:
Any email message sent to a specific domain name can be "forwarded" to an another existing address. So:
anything@your-new-domain.co.uk could be redirected to an email address like YOU@hotmail.com.

(2) Web Site Forwarding: You may already have a web site on another server. We can point any domain name on our DNS to forward to any other web site. If this domain name is typed into the browser it automatically 'forwards' to the other (existing) web site.

Registering a domain name and pointing it at your own nameservers.
If you register a domain name with us you may ask us to point it at your own nameservers. You should supply the Primary and Secondary Name Servers and their corresponding IP addresses. If you don't know what these are or what they look like, have a look at our own DNS details

Transfer an existing website to us.
If you wish to transfer an existing web site onto our servers, you will need to modify the DNS or transfer the domain name to us. If you need our help to physically move your web site please email brief details to:
move@namedropper.co.uk. We'll be pleased to quote based on the work involved.

Transfer a .co.uk domain name to us.
If you wish to transfer your .co.uk domain name to us there is no charge but you must instruct your current host to modify the TAG to NAMEDROPPER which is our TAG at Nominet UK. Please email us first with details:

Here's an example message you could send to your current host. More than likely, you'll be asked to FAX it to them.

SUBJECT: Transfer my domain <insert domain>

Please transfer the TAG on my <insert your domain name> to NAMEDROPPER. If there is any reason why this cannot be done immediately please let me know by return.

<must be signed by the registrant>

Our IPS TAG with Nominet UK is NAMEDROPPER
IPS TAGs are always in capital letters and only work with .co.uk, .me.uk, .org.uk, .ltd.uk and .plc.uk domains. If you need to transfer a domain like .com, .org, .net, .info or .biz see

Our DNS (nameserver) information is as follows.
Always double check the names and the IP addresses before you send them to any other host. (It's safer to cut and paste.)

Transfer a .com domain name to us.
dot.coms are often more difficult to transfer than .co.uk names depending on the registry you used to register the name in the first place. If you wish to transfer a .com, .net, .org, .info or .biz to us please email us with the name
trans-in@namedropper.co.uk and we'll advise from there.

Transfer any other domain name
There are hundreds of domain name suffixes like .it, .ca, .tv or .uk.com. Please email
trans-other@namedropper.co.uk and we'll advise from there.

Transfer a name away from us.
Please note: we can only take instructions from The Registrant and this applies to all domain names. If you are sending a .uk transfer request, send it to
trans-out@namedropper.co.uk. Email requests for the transfer of a domain name must come from the email address on the whois records. If you no longer have that email address we will need proof that you are the owner of the domain. A fax on headed notepaper signed by The Registrant usually suffices. We may also send a confirmation document to the registrant who must sign and return it to us. These precautions are taken to ensure the request is not bogus and that we are being asked to complete a legitimate transfer.

Completion of transfer away from us.
We will use our best endeavours to complete the transfer within 3 days of receipt of your emailed request (usually sooner) assuming no monies are outstanding on your account. All monies that may be owing to us, in whatever context, must be paid in full and funds cleared prior to arranging transfer.

We endeavour to send you a reminder one month before your domain name is due for renewal. However, the ultimate responsibility for renewal is with you, the Registrant. You must keep us informed of any changes in your address or contact details as they occur. If we can't contact you, you may lose your domain name. If you wish to renew a domain name now go

Fraudulent abuse or attempts to manipulate or in any way interfere with someone else's domain name or hosting account will be reported to the authorities. Internet fraud is a crime.
